Verse:
Psalm 90:12 – “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Lesson: The greatest gift a father can give his children isn’t money, experiences, or possessions, it’s his time. Time tells your kids, “You matter.” Time says, “I see you.” In a world where distractions pull us in every direction, the moments you choose to be fully present carry eternal weight. Your kids won’t remember every toy you bought, but they’ll never forget the Saturday mornings you played catch, the car rides filled with conversation, or the late-night talks when they needed you most. Time together builds trust, shapes identity, and anchors your children in love. Every day, we choose where to invest our hours and nothing gives a greater return than time spent building the hearts of our children.
Reflection: Ask yourself: “Do my kids get my best time, or my leftover time?” Busyness can disguise itself as purpose, but sometimes the most purposeful thing you can do is slow down. Set aside time each week that’s protected; no phones, no agenda, no distractions. Whether it’s shooting hoops, cooking dinner, or just talking, your kids don’t need perfection, they need presence.
Insight:
After one of the most accomplished careers in NFL history, Peyton Manning made a meaningful shift when he retired; he chose to invest deeply in his family. Instead of over-filling his schedule with commitments that would keep him traveling and busy, he focused his time on being present in his children’s lives, especially in their sports and activities.
In 2023, Peyton teamed up with fellow NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Davis to co-coach their sons’ middle school flag football team. True to his character, Peyton didn’t approach it casually. He brought the same intentionality and care that defined his playing career, even preparing a detailed playbook with over 200 plays. His goal wasn’t to overwhelm or push the kids, but to teach, encourage, and share the joy of the game in a meaningful way.
What stands out most is the spirit behind his involvement. Peyton attends practices, goes to games, and stays engaged. He consistently emphasizes having fun and enjoying the journey, reminding everyone that youth sports are about growth, connection, and learning, not just competition.
Peyton’s example is a valuable reminder for all of us as fathers:
Time spent with your children matters. Not simply being there physically, but showing genuine interest and engagement in our children’s world.
Family Mantra: "Moments make memories, not money."
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the precious gift of time. Help me to use it wisely and intentionally. Teach me to slow down, to listen more, and to be present with the people who matter most. Let my children see that they are a priority — not because I say it, but because I show it. Amen.
